Rental Cars and Insurance
Millions of cars are rented from car rental services each year. As with a personal automobile, rental cars typically must be insured before individuals can drive them. Purchasing or providing auto insurance is usually the responsibility of the individual who rents the automobile.

Insuring a Rental
In most cases, individuals have two options for insuring their rental vehicles:
- If an individual’s existing auto insurance policy extends coverage to all vehicles the individual drives, including rentals, then the individual may use his or her own auto insurance policy to insure the rental.
- If an individual does not have this coverage or does not wish to carry liability for any accidents he or she causes in a rental, then the individual can usually purchase rental insurance from the rental car company.
Both methods may have their advantages and disadvantages for certain drivers, but it is important to note that younger drivers who wish to rent automobiles usually must have rental coverage in their existing policies to be eligible to rent a car.
