Driving in Canada

Due to its shared border with the U.S., Canada is a popular tourist destination for many Americans. Although Canada shares many laws, customs, and practices with the U.S., there are some important differences between driving in the U.S. and driving in Canada. If you plan to drive while visiting Canada, it is important that you learn some of these differences.

Important Differences in Driving Laws

It might be important to your safety, or just to your wallet, to note the following differences about driving in Canada:

  • Distances and speeds are posted in kilometers
  • Most signs are posted in English and French, but in Quebec you may encounter signs only in French
  • Unless there are signs indicating otherwise, the speed limit in cities is 50km/hr and on highways it is 80km/hr
  • Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers
  • While most parts of Canada allow right turns on red, it is prohibited on the island of Montreal
  • Most car insurance policies will provide coverage in Canada, but it is recommended that you request a Canadian insurance card prior to your trip

Individual provinces may have their own laws regarding driving, so it may help to research the area where you will be driving.
